The Origins of the Pasteur Neighborhood
Located in the northeast of Nice, the Pasteur neighborhood stretches across a narrow area between Cimiez and the Paillon River, from the Palais des Expositions to the A8 motorway. Among more affluent neighborhoods, it has traditionally been more popular and cosmopolitan, much like the Saint-Roch area on the left bank of the Paillon. The buildings in the area date back to the 20th century. The neighborhood developed around the Pasteur Hospital, which occupies a large part of its territory. Its expansion and modernization have been accompanied by a significant urban renewal project, including the demolition of over 200 housing units, the creation of new housing on-site and off-site, and the rehabilitation of several dozen homes. The redevelopment project notably included the creation of a new Terra Blanca residence with 25 rental units and the complete renovation of the Marengo building. The project also involved the redevelopment of the Paillon riverbanks with the creation of a parking lot and a greenway for cyclists and pedestrians, as well as the redevelopment of the Maccario square. The arrival of the tram at the Lentulo square in 2013 significantly improved the neighborhood’s accessibility. Must-Sees in the Pasteur Neighborhood
As Nice’s emergency center, the Pasteur Hospital is the focal point of the neighborhood, energizing it both in terms of urban infrastructure (green spaces, public transport) and commerce. The Pasteur neighborhood also benefits from the Paillon riverbanks and the recent development of its promenades. Neighboring Cimiez, it enjoys proximity to the historic and cultural sites of the area, including the Matisse Museum, the Arenas Garden, and those of the Cimiez Monastery. The southern part of the Pasteur neighborhood borders the Nice Acropolis Exhibition Park and its adjacent facilities, such as the Jean Bouin swimming pool. The Vinaigrier Park, to the east, is less than 20 minutes by bike from the lower parts of the Pasteur neighborhood. Numerous shops have settled along the Pasteur Boulevard, especially near the Guillaume Apollinaire high school. The presence of beautiful green spaces should also be highlighted, with the Sainte-Claire Monastery site to the north of the Pasteur neighborhood.
